My Reflection on Beloit's College Mindset List

I found Beloit's College Mindset List to be humorous and sad at the same time. Some items hit home while others were way off. Some of it was rather funny, but other's were kind of sad because it was actually true.

One part of this list i thought hit right on would have to be: Ruth Bader Ginsburg has always sat on the Supreme Court. I don't even know if I was alive when she got voted on, but growing up I always knew her as "the old liberal lady on the Supreme Court." Also, the one were it says: One way or another, “It’s the economy, stupid” and always has been. I don't ever remeber when it wasn't the economy. The one that states "They never twisted the coiled handset wire aimlessly around their wrists while chatting on the phone" also hit home because with all the electronics and wireless devices going around these days, I don't even remeber when we had a phone with a cord. "Computers have never lacked a CD-ROM disk drive" also is true because every computer my family has owned has had a CD-ROM disk drive. Even though I do faintly remember being on a computer that didn't when I was like ten.

Parts that I feel were off would have to be:  Few in the class know how to write in cursive. I was taught how to write cursive in all my years of elementary school, and I still use cursive today. I also know many people my age who also use cursive. Another "off" comment would have to be: Beethoven has always been a good name for a dog. From the time a hit first grade music until a graduated highschool, my music teachers always made a big deal of past musicians. I guess I don't know much about Beethoven, but I do know who he was and what he did.

Most of these items were right though, and that kind of is sad because people my age should know more about the past and what the people before us had to go through. Alot of the items made me laugh though because I had no idea who some of those people were on there. Also, because they were so true. But either way we are who we are and we can't really change much now.

  1. I really agree with what you said about people knowing who Beethoven is, it depends on who you are, and what you're involved in. This could be said to be true about anything that was said in the article.

  2. The items about history were strange to me too. Most of them were things we could have learned in history classes in high school. I felt most of historical items were things kids our age should know.

  3. I agree with you that some of the people on the list were people that I have never heard of. I also know how to write cursive but some of my classmates that did know at one time forgot because they rarely write that way anymore.

  4. First, good for you for remembering your cursive. I sure don't remember what I was taught with the exception of my signature which is in cursive. I think the Beethoven comment was more aimed at the name of a dog such as in the Beethoven movies rather than the person, but I will agree that I don't know much about him as a person, but I know what he did. I did always want a dog named Beethoven though, but I ended up with a Rocky.

  5. I have always been very involved in music every since I was in elementary school and we were always taught a lot about past musicians and people that have made music the way it is today. Beethoven may be thought about regarding the amazing movies, but I am assuming that the majority if not all of us know that Beethoven was a very famous musician.

  6. I agree that this list is sad because many people from our generation probably agree with way too many of the items on the list. I also agree with the Beethoven comment. I didn't know very much about him when I was growing up but I did know he was a real person. And plus, Beethoven is a people name not a dog name! That's like naming a cat Jolene (we adopted a cat named Jolene from a shelter, no joke)

  7. I'm gonna have to do a little disagreeing here. First, I have never heard of Ruth Bader Ginsburg, apparently she is on the supreme court. Hmmm. And of course I know that Beethoven is the name of an incredible composer, but who doesn't remember the lovable dog? :)
